What is Masala?

Masala is simply the Indian word for “spices”, and is usually the term used for a mixture of warm spices like cardamom, ginger or cinnamon. This spice mix is widely used in Indian cuisine, from drinks to curries and lentil dishes to soups. This Oat Coffee Masala Latte is made with oat milk, warm spices and a little bit of decaf coffee, but you can always use tea instead, and that’s how you get the so popular Masala Chai Latte!

What spices are in the Masala Latte?

The Masala mixture is made with a variety of different spices, and each family and region has their own combination. Even so, there are a few spices that are present in almost every Masala mixture:

Cinnamon, to add a wooden and sweet flavor.

Ginger, that adds spiciness and warmness.

Cardamom, that’s zesty and herbal.

Pepper, that adds spice and woodiness.

Cloves, sweet but slightly bitter!

Star anise, very sweet and licorice-like, adds richness.

Nutmeg, so earthy and deep.

Using my favourite spices of the bunch, I’ve whipped up my favourite Masala mix, that I’ve been using in my Masala Coffe or Tea Lattes. Here you can find the recipe for my Easy Masala Chai Mix!

Oat Coffee Masala Latte

This Oat Coffee Masala Latte is so delicious and so simple to prepare. With warm spices like ginger, cinnamon, pepper, anise, clove and cardamom, it's the perfect drink for fall and winter time.
Servings 2 people
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

Fresh Spices Version

  • 1 tsp instant coffee
  • 1 anise star
  • 1 clove
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 cardamoms pierced with a knife or crushed
  • 4 slices fresh ginger or 1/3 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 5 or 6 peppercorns or a pinch of ground pepper
  • 1 cup of oat milk unsweetened
  • 1/3 cups of oat milk barista edition

Masala Ground Mix Version

  • 1/2 tsp of masala ground mix
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee
  • 1 anise star
  • 1 cup of oat milk unsweetened
  • 1/3 cups of oat milk barista edition

Instructions

  • Put all the ingredients, minus the barista edition oat drink, in a pot.
  • Put to heat on a very low heat so it doesn’t burn, and let it heat up slowly so that the spices release all of their flavor! Don’t forget to stir time to time.
  • 10 to 15 minutes on a low heat is enough for the latte to be infused with lots of flavor.
  • If you want, you can sweeten it with some sweetener, maple syrup, honey or sugar. But I like it a lot as is!
  • Strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer to 2 mugs.
  • Froth the barista edition oat milk until it doubles in size.
  • Add the foam on top of the infused milk.
  • Add an anise star or a dash of cinnamon to garnish, and enjoy!
